The Cathedral of Mexico City has a special shrine, full of colourful ribbons and sturdy padlocks. It is the shrine of San Ramon Nonato ("Saint Ramon Unborn"), miraculously born in Spain from a dead mother and therefore evoked by women who pray for an easy childbirth. In order to stop San Ramon preaching Christianity in North Africa, the Muslim authorities had his lips perforated and locked with a padlock. He is the patron saint of secrets and silence, and to prevent him from gossiping his lips must be rubbed frequently or a coin should be pressed over his mouth. San Ramon is very popular in Mexico, where people appeal to him by way of a spell designed to shut up gossips. One must pray, light a red candle and fasten ribbons with a padlock to his shrine. If that is done with faith, the asked favour will be granted.
