Bent is a simple, beautiful molded polar tray with plywood feet and high-gloss clear resin over graphic print or woven fabric and bottom of engineered macassar ebony. Modern or handmade? Natural materials or plastic? In Bent, these characteristics are not mutually exclusive. Uniquely modern in line but clearly not popped out of a factory. Natural materials provide warmth, man-made materials provide strength, color and durability. Forms are both, geometric and organic.

Derek Chen graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Electrical Engineering but soon turned to furniture and home decor design in 2002 with the launch of the San Francisco-based studio Urbana Design. Derek’s work maintains an engineer's eye for the appropriate application of technology, but also an awareness of the visual and tactile appeal of natural forms and materials. His designs have a clean contemporary line, but the hand of the fabricator is visible in each piece. In addition to his original tabletop pieces, he also produces a line of modern furniture and original commissions for a variety of clients.
